Welcome to Medieval life at Somerville Manor:
Since this is the flu season here are some medieval cures from Hildegard Von Bingen A medieval german nun. they use a powder she calls "flu powder" made from dried & powdered English geranium as the main ingredient with some powdered parsley and cinnamon.
1. For a runny nose: smell but don't sniff flu powder several times each day
2.Headache: caused by flu 2-3 pinches of flu powder with salt on a slice of bread.
3. Sore throat: 1 teaspoon of flu powder cooked for 2 minutes in a gill of wine drunk while still warm.
4. Coughing: 1 teaspoon of flu powder cooked in an eggless griddle cake with appelsauce 3 times a day
5. Stomach flu: 1 teaspoon of flu powder taken after each meal
6. chills: 1/2 teaspoon of flu powder taken in barley soup will prevent a more serious illness.
While I have not tried these cures I have to ask why would our medieval ancestors use a cure for centuries if it didn't work? So stay healthy.
